Additional information: This is a behavior called sequential hermaphroditism which simply refers to an animal changing its biological gender at some point in its life cycle. Searching for a mate isn’t necessary since the males are already hanging on to the female!
The gender change in slipper shells helps to maintain a balance in the population and ensure successful reproduction, ensuring the survival of the species.
Unfortunately, they are now considered uninvited guests in Europe, Japan, and the Pacific Northwest, since inadvertently being delivered with shipments of Eastern oysters in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
Their lack of natural predators and ability to thrive on hard bottoms has made them a problem in Europe, where they can damage oyster fisheries.
