James Kalm received the honor of being the subject of “Singing in Unison Part 10” and now gets the privilege of escorting viewers through a video walk-through tour of “Love Poems” part 11 of the “Singing in Unison” series of exhibitions. Curated by Chris Martin, this massive group show is Martin’s “Love Poem” to the world of painters, past and present who’ve shaped his sensibility. Beginning with the legendary Ralph Albert Blakelock (1847-1919), Martin and the Brooklyn Rail Curatorial Project have selected over a hundred and twenty works by around seventy-five artists, constituting a unique and quirky cross section of contemporary painting. Being presented at the Anton Kern Gallery, this show casts a wide glance at trends and enclaves of creativity like the “outsider,” “Street Art” “Williamsburg” and Neo-Expressionism, and one might say Martin has brought the down and dirty realm of Downtown painting to the toney Upper East Side. Many of these artists have been friends with Martin in Brooklyn since the late 1970s, and the elevation of their recognition represents a paradigm shift in the New York art scene. This presentation is dedicated to the loving memory of Walter Robinson (1950-2025). Being too large for your correspondent to list all the participants, some notably included are: Joe Bradley, Steve DiBenedetto, Sigmar Polke, Julian Schnabel, Katherine Bradford, Joyce Pensato, Rose Wylie, Purvis Young, A. R. Penk, Ron Gorchov, William Hawkins, Margrit Lewczuk, Bill Jensen, Tamara Gonzales, Lance De Los Reyes, Mike Cloud, Georg Baselitz, Josh Smith, Jack Whitten, Thomas Nozkowski, Peter Acheson, Forrest Bess, Peter Gallo, Alfred Jensen et al. A musical introduction is provided by Jazzjilo. This program was recorded March 12 and 21, 2025. #jameskalmreport #jameskalmroughcut #lorenmunk
