LIZZIE R. WILCE & MARY BARROW

At about 9.15 p.m. on 7 January 1908 during a heavy NW gale, Lizzie R. Wilce was seen heading for the harbour. She missed the entrance and was driven ashore off Pednolver Point. Within 15 minutes RNLI lifeboat James Stevens No. 10 was launched. The crew of 5 were rescued with some difficulty in the teeth of the gale and taken safely to the harbour at around 10.30
Due to the heavy swell in the harbour JS 10 could not be rehoused until 2 a.m. Lizzie R. Wilce of Falmouth was bound from Swansea to St Malo with a cargo of coal but was a total wreck.
About three hours after she had been rehoused, so 5 a.m. on 8 January, the lifeboat was again called out to the assistance of Mary Barrow (of Barrow), caught in a gale while carrying coal from Swansea to Cowes, Isle Wight.

When 3 miles off Trevose Head the ship lost nearly all its canvas and drifted helplessly towards St Ives where it beached. The lifeboat anchored and veered down to the wreck. After considerable danger in the very heavy sea, the five men on board were rescued and taken into safety. Mary Barrow was refloated 7 days later and returned to service for another 20 years before sinking off the Isle of Wight.

SUSAN ELIZABETH

Schooner Susan Elizabeth was en route to St Ives with a cargo of coal when it encountered gale-force conditions. Alerted by telegraph, the St Ives RNLI lifeboat that it was on its way. However, due to the tide and conditions it was replaced its carriage - at which point the Susan Elizabeth came into view, low in the water with most of her sails shredded. As it was clear the schooner could not make the harbour and was drifting towards Porthminster beach the lifeboat was relaunched. The schooner struck at low water and as the tide rose, the seas came high over the ship, with the crew seeking refuge on the bows until recused by James Stevens No 10. The incoming tide and the strength of the wind eventually threw the ship onto her beam end. The topsail caught by the crest of a wave and she was dismasted. The remains of the wreck were dynamited two years later.

James Stevens No. 10 was launched at 5.15 a.m during a strong NNE gale, saving 6 men and a dog on French Brigantine Julien Marie.
