Siliguri: A special traffic operation targeting school vans and buses was conducted on Friday afternoon at Darjeeling More by the Junction Traffic Guard. Unlike routine checks, this drive focused exclusively on vehicles transporting schoolchildren—examining documents, safety measures, and overall vehicle condition.

During the inspection, police stopped a private school van and were shocked by what they found. A child was seated right beside the driver without any seatbelt or safety arrangement. Further checks revealed even more alarming details—
• No fitness certificate
• No pollution certificate
• No insurance papers
• No safety or security documents
• No first-aid box, which is mandatory in school vehicles

For these severe violations, the van was fined ₹14,000 on the spot.

Police also stopped and inspected several other private school buses and vans. Many were found to have missing documents or safety lapses. Cases have been registered against multiple vehicles, and legal action has been initiated.

Traffic officials stated that such drives will continue regularly to ensure the safety of schoolchildren travelling across the city.
