Cale Yarborough defeats Benny Parsons by 1.39 seconds to take his second Daytona 500 victory. Yarborough is one of only 3 drivers to win the Daytona 500 back-to-back (Petty in 73 & 74; Yarborough in 83 & 84; Marlin in 94 & 95) and also has the record for the longest gap between victories for repeat winners (9 year gap between his win in 1968). The race is also noteworthy that for the first time a woman, Janet Guthrie, competed in the Great American race.
