What is sourcing and sinking in a circuit?

When creating a real-life circuit, particularly with a microcontroller or PLC, it is important to decide whether your device should be sourcing or sinking in your circuit. While, from an ideal perspective, the end result is the same, in actuality, there are significant performance differences between the two.
