All Access: Day 5 – A Cross-Border Education Journey to Finland

Friday kicked off bright and early as the Golden Connections delegation departed Tallinn, Estonia for a full day of exploration in neighboring Finland—continuing our school tour with great anticipation.

Upon arrival in Finland, the team split into two groups. One group visited schools within Helsinki, while the other headed just outside the city to Vantaa. The Vantaa group’s first stop was Helsinge Skola, a Swedish-speaking high school—one of the few of its kind in Finland. In a truly memorable moment, we were warmly greeted in Swahili by the region's equivalent of the Head of the Teachers Service Commission, a gesture that brought both surprise and smiles to the group.

He gave an enthusiastic and informative presentation on Finland’s education structure, after which the school’s principal led us on a guided tour. The visit coincided with the final day of school before the long summer break, giving us a glimpse of the joy and excitement within the school community.

The journey continued to Dickursby Skola, a junior school also in Vantaa, where we explored the learning environment and engaged with staff. From there, we returned to Helsinki for a visit to ICEC Töölö, a vibrant kindergarten that offered insight into the early years approach in Finland’s education system.

With a few free hours in the late afternoon, the team had the chance to explore Helsinki’s charming streets, shop for souvenirs, and soak in the city’s relaxed atmosphere. By 6:00 PM, we were back aboard the cruise ship for our return journey to Tallinn. The ship set sail at 7:00 PM, and although we arrived to a cold and rainy welcome around 9:30 PM—our first rain in Tallinn—the warmth and vibrancy of the cruise experience kept spirits high.

It was a day filled with discovery, hospitality, and cultural richness—reminding us once again of the universal power of education to connect people across borders.
