(28 Jun 2019) Hundreds of people are gathering outside the Stonewall Inn in New York City to mark the 50th anniversary of the rebellion that catalyzed a movement for LGBTQ liberation.
New Yorkers and visitors from around the world filed past the landmark bar Friday, taking photos, awaiting musical performances and reflecting on the June 28,1969 uprising.
Patrons at the gay bar resisted a police raid, sparking days of protests and longer-term organizing.
"I benefit directly from the events that took place and I wanted to pay my respects and just feel the history," said HJ Farr.
The anniversary celebration will culminate with Sunday's Pride parade.
"I wanted to be here and just showed that I'm not afraid and I can be out and proud," said Susannah Bartley.
