Have you noticed your basil plant flowering🌸? Don’t panic! 

This is a normal part of the basil plant’s life cycle, but it can mean that your harvest is coming to a close if you don’t act fast.

What’s happening when the basil plant flowers (or “bolts”) is that the plant is shifting from leaf production to reproduction. Once those flowers are pollinated, they’ll give way to seed pods that you can harvest once they turn brown 💫.

While the idea of supporting pollinators and collecting your own basil seeds is super fun (and I highly recommend it!), the leaves can become bitter and tough - not so great for use in the kitchen anymore!

So, what should you do? It depends! It’s important to reflect on your own goals in the garden to decide on the best course of action.
🌿Do you want a big basil harvest? Then, pinch off those flowers early!
🌿Do you want to save seeds for next year? Then, let those flowers go and stop harvesting
🌿What about supporting pollinators? Then, let those flowers shine
🌿Do you have a small garden and need to maximize your space? Then, pull the plants once it bolts and replace them with new basil plants (or something else entirely!)
