Section 8 refers to a federal housing assistance program in the United States, officially known as the Housing Choice Voucher Program. It is administered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and managed locally by Public Housing Agencies (PHAs). The program is designed to help low-income individuals and families, the elderly, and people with disabilities afford safe, decent, and sanitary housing in the private market.

With Section 8, qualified participants receive housing vouchers that cover a portion of their rent. The tenant typically pays 30% of their adjusted monthly income toward rent and utilities, and the voucher covers the rest, up to a certain limit. The housing can include apartments, townhouses, or single-family homes, as long as the landlord agrees to participate and the unit passes a HUD inspection.

There are two main types of Section 8 assistance:
1. Tenant-Based Vouchers: The most common type; these vouchers move with the tenant if they choose to relocate.
2. Project-Based Vouchers: These are tied to specific housing units and don’t transfer with the tenant if they move.

Due to high demand, waiting lists for Section 8 assistance can be long, and some PHAs periodically close their application lists when demand exceeds availability.
