Georgia O’Keeffe (November 15, 1887 – March 6, 1986) was a pioneering American modernist artist best known for her large-scale, close-up paintings of flowers, desert landscapes, and bones. Born in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, O’Keeffe developed a distinctive style that blended abstraction with natural forms, becoming a central figure in American modern art.

She studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Students League of New York before breaking away from academic traditions. Her innovative charcoal drawings caught the attention of photographer and art promoter Alfred Stieglitz, who later became her husband and lifelong supporter.

O’Keeffe’s most iconic works include her enlarged flower paintings, such as Black Iris and Jimson Weed, which many interpreted as subtly symbolic and boldly feminine. Later, inspired by the New Mexico desert, she created striking paintings of sun-bleached bones, red hills, and adobe structures.

Living much of her later life in the American Southwest, O’Keeffe became synonymous with the rugged beauty of the region. Her legacy endures as one of the most important and influential artists of the 20th century, often referred to as the “Mother of American Modernism.”
