At least 7 new Saudi airstrikes target UAE-aligned forces in Hadramout, Yemen as UAE-backed forces STC claimed combined “attacks by a mix of the Muslim Brotherhood, al-Qaeda, and the Houthis”. The fresh Saudi strikes come ahead of a major offensive by the Saudi-backed National Shield Forces aimed at retaking the area. Meanwhile the Saudi Ambassador to Yemen said UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council closed the Aden airport prevented a Saudi official aircraft carrying diplomats from landing in Aden on 1 January despite prior understanding. Meanwhile the Emir of Qatar is attempting a mediation between the UAE, the driving force behind the 2017 boycott/blockade, and Saudi Arabia, the leading implementer. Shaikh Tamim Al Thani spoke to the UAE president in an attempt to find a way to defuse the situation between Riyadh and Abu Dhabi in Yemen.
Israeli commentator Rafi Glick, writing in the Times of Israel says UAE’s actions in Yemen were “highly active in consolidating the new India-Middle East corridor” and the recent Israeli recognition of Somaliland could enable a “India–UAE-Somaliland–Ethiopia corridor” which could “serve as a route bypassing Yemen and as an alternative bridge to Europe — via Sudan and the port of Benghazi in Libya”
