Serbia's ruling Socialist Party, which six months ago seemed seriously weakened by 88 days of mass opposition-led protests, should emerge with a tighter grip on power from Sunday's (21/9) legislative and presidential elections. Two of Zajedno's three former components, the Democratic Party, headed by Belgrade mayor Zoran Djindjic, and the Civic Alliance, headed by Vesna Pesic, are among a dozen parties calling for a boycott of the elections, claiming they are unfair. In the presidential elections opinion polls make Socialist Party candidate Zoran Lilic the favourite, followed by ultranationalist Vojislav Seselj and Vuk Draskovic of the Serb Renewal Movement, the third former member of Zajedno. The Socialists and their allies are predicted to take 140 of the 250 seats in parliament.
