Allison Schroeder on Her Inspiration for Hidden Figures

Allison grew up in Florida near Kennedy Space Center where both her grandparents worked. Her grandmother, Ruth Schroeder, like the women of Hidden Figures, was a mathematician and software engineer at NASA. She was part of the Apollo and Shuttle missions, working closely with John Young and eventually winning NASA's prestigious Silver Snoopy Award. Allison's grandfather, Elmer Schroeder, also worked at Cape Canaveral as an aerospace engineer. She spent her high school years interning at NASA in the NASA NURTURE program, rotating through various departments. She then attended Stanford University as an undergraduate, double-majoring in Economics and Writing. She interned with a missile launch company the summer after her Freshman year.
