We wandered towards the shores of Puget Sound to Titlow Park, a beautiful, 75 acre park in Southwest Tacoma, Washington.

Extensive beach frontage & an estuary lagoon serves as a focal point to park visitors, The lagoon and surrounding areas create an inviting habitat for birds, ducks & wildlife.

While scanning a large flock of about 150 American Wigeon, a duck common to this area during the winter, we were surprised to find a rare vagrant to North America, the Eurasian Wigeon!

The male Eurasian Wigeon, shows a rufous colored head with Buffy forehead, pearly gray body & pinkish chest. The female can be very difficult to distinguish from the American Wigeon; generally a warmer brown with little contrast between head, chest & flanks.

It is common for this rare vagrant to flock with American Wigeon. Birds wintering in Pacific Lowlands from British Columbia Canada to California USA probably come from Siberia.
