On this day May 31, 1984, Sir Viv Richards played one of the greatest innings in one day international cricket history. Richards scored 189* against England in the first Texaco Trophy match at Manchester. His 189* came off only 170 balls, with 21 fours and 5 sixes.

West Indies Captain Clive Lloyd elected to bat first. Richards scored his half century in 27 over. At one point West Indies were 102 for 7 and
Viv Richards was already having 65 runs to his name. In 41st over Richards scored his 7th century and 3rd against England. West Indies ended up scoring 272 for 9. Richards rescued his side from a perilous position. Richards smashed 189 to win the game off his own bat.
England only scored 168 and West Indies won by 104 runs.

Richards mad his 150 mark by hitting glories six. Eldine Baptiste was the only other West Indian even to reach double figures. Of the last-wicket partnership of 106, Michael Holding made 12. Sir Viv Richards became the Player of The Match.

Richards 189* holds the record for the highest individual ODI score when batting at number 4 position. At that time Richards was the highest individual ODI scorer in cricket history. He hold his record more than 12 years. Saeed Anwar brocked his recode by scoring 194 runs against India in 1997. Richards is now 9th highest individual ODI scorer in cricket history.

In 1986, he became the first batsman to score a Test century at a strike rate of over 150.

He scored the fastest century in Test history (56 balls) in 1986, and then Brendon McCullum broked by 54-ball in 2016.

He set a record for being the fastest batsman to 1,000 ODI runs (21 innings); this record has subsequently been equaled by Kevin Pietersen, Babar Azam, Jonathan Trott and Quinton de Kock in just 21 innings.
He along with Michael Holding set the record for the highest ever 10th wicket partnership (106*) in ODI history.

He also holds the record for the highest individual ODI score 189* runs when batting at number 4 position.

He became the first player to score a fifty and to take a five wicket haul in the same ODI.

He also became the first cricketer to score a century as well as to take a five wicket haul in the same ODI match.

He was the first player to complete the double of scoring 1000 runs and taking 50 wickets in ODI history.
