The ruling Saenuri Party has slammed the main opposition Democratic Party of Korea for scrapping the planned talks with the president,... and accused the party of being irresponsible.
Democratic Party leader Choo Mi-ae and President Park had agreed yesterday to hold talks to find a breakthrough amid this unprecedented leadership crisis,... but Choo later called the talks off due to strong opposition within her party and from the minor opposition bloc.
Ruling party floor leader Chung Jin-suk said today... that the main opposition party has failed to offer any viable solutions to the crisis and questioned whether the Democratic Party is working to resolve the national crisis or just trying to win next year's presidential election.
He suggested the opposition form a consultative group... comprising the three leaders of the opposition bloc and the National Assembly speaker... to thrash out parliament's next move.
Firing back,... the floor leader of the main opposition party, Woo Sang-ho, said this morning that the party has settled on taking a tougher stance that includes intensifying the pressure on President Park to resign.
Woo said two-thirds of the Korean people either want the president to resign or they want to see her impeached,... so the party is following the will of the people.
He called on the president to give up control of state affairs,... saying that once she does that,... lawmakers will decide the next steps.
Meanwhile, the internal feud within the ruling Saenuri Party continues,... with the twelve members of the ruling Saenuri Party's non-pro-President Park faction -- including former party leader Kim Moo-sung and former Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon -- calling for an overhaul of the party and the immediate resignation of the current leadership.
