In this video, Dr. Puru Dhawan explains each stage of kidney failure, how doctors check it using eGFR values, and why some symptoms don’t show up early. 𝗞𝗶𝗱𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝗙𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝗚𝗙𝗥

Kidney failure is measured using a value called eGFR (Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate). This value is not a separate test but is calculated from your creatinine levels, age, gender, and other details. Here are the stages:
Stage 1: eGFR above 90—early signs like protein in urine may appear.
Stage 2: eGFR between 60 and 90—mild rise in creatinine levels.
Stage 3 (3A & 3B): eGFR between 30 and 60—shows moderate kidney damage.
Stage 4: eGFR between 15 and 30—symptoms like tiredness and poor appetite may begin.
Stage 5 (End Stage): eGFR below 15—dialysis or transplant may be needed.

𝗘𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗦𝘆𝗺𝗽𝘁𝗼𝗺𝘀 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗢𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗜𝗴𝗻𝗼𝗿𝗲

In the beginning stages, most people don’t feel anything unusual. Kidneys can lose more than half of their function without showing clear signs. Common symptoms like weakness, vomiting, itching, or shortness of breath usually appear in later stages, especially Stage 3 and beyond. That’s why many people don’t even know they have kidney issues until it’s already serious.
