How To Fix A Leaky Charcoal Kettle Grill - Easy BBQ Tips For Beginners

Charcoal kettle grills are notorious for air leaks, which means controlling your temperatures may become more challenging. However, you can easily fix this problem with a few simple tricks.

First, if your kettle grill lid is extremely out of round, you can hug the lid to bring it closer to its optimal shape. This likely won’t fix the problem completely, but it will get you closer.

Next, if you have minor smoke leaks, you’ll want to do some micro tweaking. I like to do this at the beginning of a cook when the temperatures are stabilizing. If you aren’t ready to cook yet, you can start by warming up the kettle by adding a few briquettes into the slow ‘n sear and getting them lit.

Once the lid is slightly warmed, you'll need to find where the grill lid isn’t sitting properly on the bottom bowl. To do this, tap the edge of the lid and listen for hollow sounds. These are the sections you want to seal by applying a little bit of pressure to that area, along with the opposite side. When you're done, continue tapping around the grill lid and make more micro tweaks until you're happy with the seal.

We also know that some kettle grills are more challenging to troubleshoot than others. If you run into a problem and don’t have time to fix it properly, you can simply grab some large binder clips and place three around the perimeter of the grill. This will lock the lid and bowl together, creating an excellent seal.
