This is a song about the BIGGEST steam locomotive in the world that ran on the Union Pacific Railroad line. The 'Big Boys' were used on the Overland Route on long continuous climbs at the summit of Sherman and west of Green River through the Wasatch range. They were first called the "titans of the Wasatch," but quickly adopted the name 'Big Boy' - which was written on one of the drive rods by an unknown worker at ALCO.
TITANS OF THE WASATCH (BALLAD OF THE BIG BOY)
Listen up my friends won't you lend an ear?,
tell ya bout the biggest steam Engine in the world
600 tons of iron loving fun ,
Rolls down the tracks like a huge leviathan
Big Boy, Big Boy, Hear the power and the rumble of a big, big boy
Big Boy, Big Boy ,Throttle up, the always tough big big boy
Bout 6,000 horses, maybe even more,
Wheel configuration4-8-8-4
There's never been a bigger engine on the UP line,
When I think about it I get shivers up my spine
Big Boy, Big Boy Full head of steam, ah lookn mean Big Big Boy
Big Boy, Big Boy The steepest grade, will never sway a Big Big Biy
You heard about Elijah called fire from the sky,
Moses made the Red sea split from side to side
The walls of Jericho came tumbling down with a crash,
Now you know about those titans of the Wahsatch
Big Boy, Big Boy Nothing can compare Big, big Boy
Big Boy, Big Boy The awesome strength and might of a big big boy
There ain't nothing quite like a Big Big Boy
Someday I wanna ride on a big big boy
Additional verse
Up and over Sherman pass, and the mountains in utah,
This giant locomotive, can easily climb them all
Overland through green river, Cheyenne to Laramie,
A big boy goin' down the track's a real sight to see
Big Boy, Big Boy See them driv'n wheels a pound'n on a big big boy
Big Boy Big Boy Through the plains of wyom'n rides a big big boy
