The Leader in Me: How to Teach Students Leadership

Описание к видео The Leader in Me: How to Teach Students Leadership

This video shows how one Leader in Me School uses data notebooks, quality tools, events, and traditions to empower their students to be leaders. These students are empowered through The Leader in Me to self-direct their lives and their learning. They learn essential 21st-century leadership and life skills in a variety of ways, some of which are shown in this video.

Data notebooks
Data notebooks are a place where students can set and track progress toward their personal and academic goals. In the video, students share their tracking sheets and goals. Data notebooks allow students to know their grades the entire school year, which empowers them to be more involved in the learning process.

Quality Tools
Students learn how to use quality tools for planning, writing, and making decisions. Students share in this video how they use quality tools such as a Venn Diagram, a Fishbone Diagram, and a Lotus Diagram.

Interviewing Teachers
At this Leader in Me School, students are involved in the interviewing and selection process for new teachers. A current teacher shares about his experience of being interviewed by the students. He had a one-hour interview with teachers and then had another one-hour interview with students. He said the hardest questions came from the students. They were empowered, showed ownership, and knew = what they wanted in a teacher.

Meeting Leaders
Community leaders visit the school, and students have the opportunity to meet with and learn from them.

Community service
Each grade level plans and completes two service projects each year. Students lead the planning and execution of the projects.

Building Traditions
School traditions help build a culture of leadership. For example, at this Leader in Me School, they have an inaugural ball where students learn social etiquette.

Leadership Days
At this school’s Leadership Days, students showcase their leadership skills to visiting parents and community members. Students greet the visitors, share their talents, give speeches, and teach visitors about leadership.
