The Story of Little Black Sambo

Little Black Sambo, a young boy from India, is given a beautiful new red coat, blue trousers, green umbrella, and purple shoes with crimson soles and linings. Delighted with his new attire, he sets off for the market. Along the way, he encounters four hungry tigers, each with a different appetite. Sambo cleverly outwits each tiger by giving them a piece of his clothing, which they proceed to chase each other around a tree until they melt into a pool of butter. Sambo retrieves his clothes and returns home, where his mother uses the butter to make pancakes.

The Story of Little Black Mingo

Little Black Mingo, an orphan girl, lives with a cruel old woman named Black Noggy. One day, Black Noggy sends Mingo to fetch water from the river. On her way, Mingo encounters a crocodile who attempts to steal her chatty (water jar). Mingo outsmarts the crocodile by tricking it into carrying the chatty to an island, where it is promptly eaten by a mongoose. The crocodile, enraged by the loss of its meal, returns to Black Noggy's house and devours her. Mingo is rescued by the mongoose and lives happily ever after.

Analysis

Both stories follow a similar pattern: the protagonist, a young child, encounters a series of challenges and ultimately overcomes them through their wit and resourcefulness. However, the stories also differ in their tone and themes. "The Story of Little Black Sambo" is a lighthearted tale with a happy ending, while "The Story of Little Black Mingo" is a more cautionary story with a darker tone.
