Active immunization is the process of introducing an antigen into a person to activate an immune response. If the antigen is a pathogen, or part of a pathogen, the individual will be protected from future infection.

Passive immunization, or immunotherapy, involves injecting protective antibodies into an individual. Antitoxins are a form off passive immunization

Vaccine types include killed or inactivated pathogens; live attenuated pathogens; inactivated toxins (toxoids); fragments of a pathogen (subunit vaccine); DNA or RNA vaccines

Herd immunity to a communicable disease arises in a population when the number of people immunized is sufficient to make transmission of the infectious agent to an unimmunized person less likely.
