Dungeness Spit Trail, a ten-mile out-and-back trail that stretches into the Strait of Juan de Fuca near Sequim, WA. Thanks to the cool ocean air, this long but easy trail is perfect for a refreshing walk when inland temperatures soar. The Spit is part of the Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge, home to thousands of birds. On a lucky day, you might spot humpback whales in the strait.

To escape from the scorching heatwave, I took the ferry from Edmonds to Kingston. The breeze on the boat has always been a gift in summer.

Although the trail is all flat, traversing the soft sandy beach and pebbles required more effort than I anticipated.

Ten miles by the sea, a great afternoon spent in nature.
