When Heðinn stole Hildr, daughter of King Högni, it sparked a pursuit that could only end in blood. Even when gold and peace were offered on the cold shores of Háey, Högni's pride — and his cursed dwarven sword, Dáinsleif, which cannot be sheathed without taking a life — demanded war.

But death was not the end. Each night Hildr walks among the fallen and wakes them. By day they kill each other. By night they rise. The ultimate punishment for choosing steel over peace: never being allowed to put it down.

Högni sailed to council far
Left hearth and hall beneath his star
Heðinn waited, tide held still
Not for gold, but darker will

Strike when shields are set aside
Strike when fathers turn their stride
He came not just to steal or raid
But take what cannot be repaid

He seized Hildr before the dawn
Ship and hoard and daughter gone
When Högni reached the empty shore
Loss grew teeth and asked for war

No delay. No council sworn
Oars struck west through salt and storm
Vengeance chose the shortest way
To Háey’s cold and broken bay

There on Háey the war-hosts met
Steel drawn tight with no regret
Before first blood could mark the sand
Heðinn spoke with open hand

Gold he sent and rings he laid:
“Take this price. Let peace be made”
Högni answered, cold and clear:
“Honor weighs more than your fear”

Gold was offered. Peace denied
Ancient pride stood side by side
When words were spent and oaths ran dry
The sword was drawn — and fate replied

Dáinsleif rose from dwarf-made sleep
Once awake, it must drink deep
Steel rang out; the shore ran red
Till sun went down among the dead

Night fell hard on shattered ground
Then Hildr walked where men lay down
No curse she spoke, no cry she gave
She touched the cost they chose to pay

At dawn the dead stood armed once more
Yesterday’s slain returned to war
By day they kill. By night they rise
Death itself denied its prize

By day they fall. By night they stand
Steel remembers. Flesh unmanned
No wound holds. No blade can cease
Only battle without peace

Why did Hildr bind the slain?
For lover’s theft or father’s pride?
Or to force all who choose the blade
To live the war their wrath had made?

Högni would not take the gold
Heðinn dared what should not hold
Each chose steel where peace had stood
Now both must pay in endless blood

What you start in rage and claim
What you seal with sword and name
Returns unbroken, unreleased
A war that knows no final peace

So they fight on Háey’s cold shore
Die and rise forevermore
Till time itself and worlds collapse
Their battle shall never pass
