US President Donald Trump has announced that his administration will work to permanently pause migration from what he called “third world countries,” citing the need for the US system to recover. He stated that federal benefits and subsidies for non-citizens will be ended and warned that migrants who pose security risks, undermine domestic stability, or are deemed “non-compatible with Western civilization” may face denaturalization and deportation. The administration has ordered a sweeping review of asylum approvals granted under former President Joe Biden, as well as green cards issued to citizens of 19 countries. The directive follows the recent killing of a National Guard member near the White House. The review could affect nearly 233,000 refugees who arrived between January 2021 and February 2025.
