One morning in May, in a light rain, at 5 o'clock we left Bucharest for Sfântu Gheorghe, a town in the Delta, where the Danube flows into the sea.
The road passed relatively quickly, and in Dobrogea even if there were some clouds in the sky, the asphalt was dry.
At Murighiol we left the car in the parking lot with a barrier (costs 20 lei/day) and got on the boat heading towards Sfântu Gheorghe.
The boat trip between Murighiol and Sfântu Gheorghe takes 50 minutes and costs between 60 and 100 lei/person, depending on the boat.
An old fishermen settlement, Sfantu Gheorghe is attested in historical documents from the 14th century, when the development of the economy increased the role of Italian (Genoese) merchants especially around the Sfantu Gheorghe arm. At that time, the Genoese held a real monopoly in the waters of the Black Sea, trading fish caught at the mouth of the Danube. For this reason, San-Giorgio also appears on the map of the Genoese Visconti in 1318. A legend also says that in 1821 a Turkish warship came to the village, in which there was also a Pasha. On that day, the shepherds' horse and the fishermen's song resounded in the village. It was the day of Saint George and in honour of this holiday, the pasha named the village "Katarlez", meaning Saint George. After the village bore the two names: San-Giorgio and Katarlez, it reached its present name, Sfantu Gheorghe, which comes from the dedication of the old church. Într-o dimineață de mai, pe o ploaie măruntă, la ora 5, am plecat din București spre Sfântu Gheorghe, un oraș din Deltă, unde Dunărea se varsă în mare.
Drumul a trecut relativ repede, iar în Dobrogea, chiar dacă pe cer erau câțiva nori, asfaltul era uscat.
La Murighiol am lăsat mașina în parcarea cu barieră (costă 20 de lei/zi) și ne-am urcat pe vaporașul care se îndrepta spre Sfântu Gheorghe.
Călătoria cu barca între Murighiol și Sfântu Gheorghe durează 50 de minute și costă între 60 și 100 de lei/persoană, în funcție de barcă.
"Veche așezare de pescari, Sfântu Gheorghe este atestată în documente istorice din secolul al XIV-lea, când dezvoltarea economiei a sporit rolul negustorilor italieni (genovezi) mai ales în jurul brațului Sfântu Gheorghe. După ce satul a purtat cele două nume: San-Giorgio și Katarlez, a ajuns la numele actual, Sfântu Gheorghe, care provine de la hramul bisericii vechi.
