Kohberger, who recently pleaded guilty to the brutal murders of four University of Idaho students, showed signs of admiration for BTK during his PhD studies—writing about the distinction between M.O. and signature in Rader’s crimes. But as Dr. G explains, Kohberger lacks the chilling originality of his idols and instead comes across as a copycat with delusions of criminal legacy.
In early July 2025, Bryan Kohberger pleaded guilty to the November 13, 2022 murders of four University of Idaho students—Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin—in exchange for a plea deal that spared him the death penalty. On July 23, 2025, he was sentenced to four consecutive life sentences without parole, plus a 10-year term for burglary and hefty fines and restitution totaling over $200,000. During sentencing, Judge Hippler characterized him as the “worst of the worst,” and Kohberger declined to speak when given the opportunity.
Since sentencing, investigators have released hundreds of previously sealed documents painting an even more disturbing portrait. Notably:
Prosecutors recently revealed that Kohberger kept identification cards belonging to two women he knew, unrelated to the case—apparently stored in his car’s glovebox, suggesting macabre “keepsakes” and raising new concern about his mindset. Police files describe dense documentation of his behavior prior to and after the murders: obsessive cleanliness (frequent showers, constant hand‑washing), severe sleep disturbances, and suspicious grooming habits noted by inmates. In interviews, Prosecutor Bill Thompson stated Kohberger likely surveilled the victims’ neighborhood dozens of times, possibly entered the house before the crime via a second‑floor sliding door, and was familiar with its layout—hinting at premeditation and stalking. Investigators believe a Ka‑Bar knife sheath found at the scene—with DNA matching Kohberger’s father—was a key link; the actual knife remains unrecovered. New findings suggest the possibility he used a second weapon, based on injuries inconsistent with the main blade—especially the severe trauma inflicted on victim Kaylee Goncalves—and that the surviving roommate may have been spared due to Kohberger’s panic and exhaustion. A gag order was lifted in mid‑July 2025, allowing broader public access to internal documents, which may soon include investigative photos, victim-impact evidence, and legal filings; the unsealing process is ongoing and expected to take several months.
