Im sure we have all had the idea that harsh light is terrible for photography. I guess for wedding photographers, it must be a nightmare!

But in street photography, this can give us some interesting results if we use this light to our advantage instead of being limited by it.

In the mornings, look for long shadows and take advantage of the slightly softer light. See how the light falls between buildings and look for long shadows.

Midday is the most challenging when the light is hardest directly over us. In this situation I head inside the metro or train stations. Look for big overhead windows that will soften the light, and also at the exits for silhouettes.

When the afternoon comes, the same principles as in the morning applies. Look for the long shadows again, and use the soft light.

Also try the same location both in the morning, midday and afternoon. One location can have 3 very different looks about it in different light, so make a mental note of what a spot may look like at a different time.
