Kreutzer Etude #13 (Peter's Edition)
Kim Kaloyanides Kennedy, violin
Recorded at home, March 2021

Since teaching via zoom, I have had to get creative with how to share sound goals. I have been doing a lot of recording examples for scales, arpeggios, pieces and now etudes.
Kreutzer Etude #13 (Peters Edition):
It's been a few weeks since I have posted any etudes. Students have stayed put on their assignments for a while. It can be very confusing why there are 2 Kreutzer 13's. It's because one edition (the Galamian edition) has 42 etudes, and the Peters Edition only has 40. I have been utilizing the Peters Edition in lessons because I found it on IMSLP, and it is super easy to share with students and load the PDF into my iPad for markup. But, I grew up with the Galamian Edition, so I refer to that one as needed. I have been faithful to follow the directions in the part I'm reading off of, so I am not changing any bowings or fingerings in order to make it more comfortable. The most difficult thing about this etude are the 4th finger stretches and non anchored random reaches, but this is an ABSOLUTELY necessary technique to master as we use this sort of thing ALL the TIME in all sorts of music. These reaches make it VERY easy to be out of tune as the slightest bend/angle change of the fingertip causes bend and inaccuracy in true pitch. Pitch is much more accurate, direct, precise, absolute with very straight fingertips. Stretching and reaching means one cannot play with such a straight tipped finger, it must be the flatter side. If you like vague and approximate pitch, flat fingers are the way to go! Lol. I decided to add a few tempo effects just before the recap, one is to run ahead and then to pull back and be pesante, for variation, as well as the music seemed to already ask for such a character. The tempo is moderato, and I feel the mood is on the sweet and tender side, for the most part.
