Mouse studies showed some effect → In mice, baking soda made the tumor environment less acidic and reduced cancer spread by ~30%. But this did not work in humans.

Human dosage is unsafe → The effective mouse dose equals about 20 grams per day for a 70 kg person. This causes metabolic alkalosis, electrolyte imbalance, and hypertension in humans, so it cannot be recommended.

Small daily doses don’t affect blood pH → A common online dose (0.5 teaspoon = 2–3 g) does not change blood pH significantly, because the body keeps blood pH tightly regulated (7.35–7.45).

Only urine pH changes → Small doses can raise urine pH from 5–6 to 7–8 for about 3 hours. This is mostly a number change without health benefit, except in uric acid kidney stones or drug excretion.

Heartburn relief is real but short-lived → Baking soda neutralizes stomach acid instantly, raising gastric pH from 1–2 to 4–5. Relief is temporary, and acid rebound soon follows.

Risk of stomach distension/rupture → Neutralizing acid produces carbon dioxide gas → bloating, belching, discomfort. After a heavy meal, in rare cases, even stomach rupture is possible.

High doses are dangerous → More than 15 grams per day (~3 teaspoons) long-term can cause metabolic alkalosis, with symptoms like confusion, dizziness, cramps, arrhythmias, and even seizures.

Raises sodium load → Even 0.5 teaspoon daily provides ~30% of sodium requirement. Can cause edema, hypertension, weight gain (up to 2 kg in days), especially in people with kidney disease, heart failure, or over 60.

Evidence-based medical use → Proven benefit only in chronic kidney disease with metabolic acidosis (stages 3–5, when bicarbonate 22 mEq/L). In these patients, sodium bicarbonate can slow kidney damage progression.

Other small effects → Can slightly improve sports performance by buffering lactic acid. Beneficial in uric acid stones with higher, divided doses. But not protective against cancer or systemic diseases.
