the animated egg? well...yes & no....record companies were always eager to cash in on new trends that came along and many had labels that did just that plus a whole plethora of smaller independent's that could move records quickly to outlets..one such company in los angeles was 'alshire' who specialised in such business through its country wide network of retail super markets/pharmacy's/chain stores etc in fact anywhere that could sell its wares...they had been formed in 1957 by dave miller as 'somerset records' but al sherman bought them out (as well as publishing) in '63 & in turn brought along a different mind set to the operation...he would sell low budget albums (recorded quickly and cheaply) under the banner of '101 strings' play???? it would be mambo/exotica/latin/rumba/hawaii/the golden hits etc etc and its here that in '68 he released probably the best of the lot 'astro sounds from beyond the year 2000' oh yes! a beautiful cash-in on the psychedelic sound then happening country wide...highly sought after now and a prized item for collectors.... the 101 strings albums now litter thrift shops in their thousands and worthless...at the same time he would sell albums by make believe bands such as 'the animated egg'/the black diamonds - a tribute to jimi hendrix the same album but with the tracks re-named!!!! and the 101 strings album with strings added on some tracks and again renamed ...the 101 strings record had this track as flame-out! but one small detail unknown to many is that the egg version has an added 30secs to the ending! and thats what your hearing here....all the musicians on these albums were faceless but on this record we actually know the players...all were top notch session musicians led by that jack of all trades jerry cole/edgar lamar/don dexter/tommy lee/glenn cass/billy preston!/norman cass and billy joe hastings...in all these 101 strings albums had over 200 releases...i have only stratched the surface here and a book deserves to be written on the label and its releases but 'the animated egg/astro sounds from beyond the year 2000' remain its crowning glory...san francisco too had its cash-ins just look at the 'san francisco international pop festival volume one' album put out by salinas band the e types manager in '68 featuring local bands under assumed names! the e types were 'charolette woods' ..... and palo alto's new delhi river band 'haight-ashbury blues band' etc etc....
