1942 is the first game in a bit of a confusing (date-wise, lol), but classic, shooting series from Capcom. The series would later become known as the "19XX" series. There are many ports for various games in the series, but it should be noted that the final game in the series, 1944: The Loop Master, was actually developed by 8ing/Raizing, and not Capcom. Also, a slight note about this video; for some odd reason, the very far right corner got cut off...where those "Rs" are, there are 3 of them, but the very edge is cut. That is the only thing that is remotely cut, but I am puzzled as the other videos I recorded didn't display the same problem and they were all recorded the same. It's no biggie though...at any rate, being one of the earliest games from Capcom in 1984, it predates Mega Man/Rockman by a couple of years, though the MM series is generally vastly more known than the "19XX" series. Still, Capcom does still make mention of the series here and there.

"1942 is set in the Pacific theater of World War II. The goal is to reach Tokyo and destroy the entire Japanese air fleet. The player pilots a plane dubbed the "Super Ace". The player has to shoot down enemy planes; to avoid enemy fire, the player can perform a roll or vertical loop. During the game the player may collect a series of power-ups, one of them allowing the plane to be escorted by two other smaller fighters in a Tip Tow formation. There were few enemies: Kawasaki Ki-61s, Mitsubishi A6M Zeros and Kawasaki Ki-48s. The boss plane is a Nakajima G8N.

The game was later ported to the Famicom (developed by Micronics), MSX, NEC PC-8801, Windows Mobile Professional, and Game Boy Color. It was ported by the European games publisher Elite Systems to the Amstrad CPC, ZX Spectrum and Commodore 64. The game was included as part of Capcom Classics Collection for the Xbox and PlayStation 2 in 2005. The arcade version was released on the Wii Virtual Console in Japan on December 21, 2010, the PAL region on January 21, 2011, and in North America on January 24, 2011."

Being one of the first titles that got "big" for Capcom, the series would get five "main" games (not counting ports...six if you want to include 1943: Kai), at least currently, and they were all successful in varying degrees. The game looks and sounds simple and the game is one of those "simple to understand, hard to master" titles...for 1984 though, many who were playing this game regularly in arcades could tell you that it was a great experience. Of course, fast forwarding, it doesn't appear like much...but if that's what you think, try playing some of the later games in the series.
