Eclipse:
Sometimes the Sun, the Earth, and the moon comes in a straight line. Such situation is termed as an eclipse. In this video we are going to discuss about Solar Eclipse and Lunar Eclipse.

Solar Eclipse:
On a special new moon day sun, earth and moon may come in straight line such that the shadow of moon falls on the earth. This is called solar eclipse. Clearly, on solar eclipse the moon comes between the sun and the earth. The shadow of moon consists of a darker part called umbra and the lighter part called penumbra. If the sun is not completely covered by moon then this is called partial solar eclipse. If we see the sun covered by the moon completely then this is called total solar eclipse.

Lunar Eclipse:
On a special full moon night, the sun, the earth and the moon comes in a straight line such that the shadow of earth falls on the moon. This is called lunar eclipse. Clearly, on lunar eclipse the earth comes between the sun and the moon. If the moon passes through the lighter part of the shadow i.e. penumbra then the eclipse is partial lunar eclipse. But if moon passes through the darker part of the shadow i.e. umbra then the eclipse is total lunar eclipse. During total lunar eclipse moon appears red. It is also called blood moon.

Condition for occurrence of Eclipse
The chances of earth, sun and moon to come in a straight line are rare. Because of which on a new moon day, the shadow of moon misses the earth and falls above or below it. Similarly on a full moon night the shadow of earth misses the moon and falls above or below it. This is a result eclipses does not occur on every new moon or full moon days.
