When people ask me about the best camera for street photography, my answer is that the best one is the one you know how to use. For me, the Leica M11 Monochrom feels like the perfect tool because it forces me to think differently, to focus on light and shadow, and to commit fully to black and white. But these tips will work no matter if you are shooting with a Leica, a Ricoh GR, a Fuji, or even your phone.

I’ll also touch on the best settings for street photography, from using zone focus with manual lenses, to setting a fast enough shutter speed to freeze movement, to keeping ISO in check while maintaining flexibility in changing light. I’ll show you how I prepare my camera before walking out the door, and why I almost never touch the dials once I’m in the middle of shooting.

We’ll also talk about the best lenses for street photography, and why I usually stick to 35mm or 50mm focal lengths. These lenses let me stay close to the action without drawing too much attention, and they give me enough versatility to frame architecture, portraits, and candid moments all within the same walk.
