Cluny Abbey is Benedictine monastery dedicated to St Peter and Paul and was founded in 910 by the Duke William I of Aquitaine. Over the centuries the Abbey grew as one of the most influential theological and religious centres. It has been considered that the Cluny Abbey was the mother house for more than 1000 monasteries and seat of the largest monastic order, the Cluniac Order.
The Abbey went into decline in the late Middle Ages mainly for financial reasons. In the 15th century abbot Jean de Bourbon made efforts to solve rising problems, however, it was unable to reverse the downfall. The process has been accelerated by the religious wars in the 16th century.
In the 18th century a vast building program was introduced in order to rebuild the monastery and to revive the glory and influence of the great Cluny Abbey and Cluniac order. So the medieval buildings were destroyed and new neoclassicals were raised.
The French revolution put the final accord of the annihilation of once the greatest and most influential theological center in the Medieval Christian world - Cluny Abbey. In the 19th century remaining buildings were sold off.

The town of Cluny developed thanks to the economic activities generated by the abbey. In Cluny you may see over 140 Medieval houses, mainly Romanesque style, built between the 11th and 14th centuries. Some of them still have their original facade decoration.

It was in the beggining of 2020. I had already bought tickets to visit in March France and Switzerland. I had not any clues that this trip would be the last one before the pandemic changed our lives forever. I did that long journey just before France had been put on lockdown.
