A large group of peasant women were bending over to work in the fields. They wore bamboo hats, rolled up their trouser legs to their knees, and walked barefoot in the muddy paddy fields. The morning mist had not yet dissipated, and the sun shone through the clouds, casting mottled light and shadows. The women were divided into several groups. Some were responsible for throwing the seedlings, their arms drew smooth arcs, and the tender green seedlings fell evenly into the water; some followed up to plant, and their fingers deftly straightened the crooked seedlings and inserted them into the mud. Sweat slid down their tanned cheeks, but their laughter always echoed in the fields. The older peasant women straightened up and beat their backs from time to time, but soon bent down to continue working. Bamboo baskets were placed on the ridges of the fields, filled with rice balls and water bottles wrapped in cloth. Occasionally, a dragonfly flew over the water, stopped at the edge of a peasant woman's bamboo hat to rest, and then flew up with her moving steps. The smell of soil mixed with the fragrance of young seedlings spread over this land awakened by the women's hands.
