District 51 is considering new school boundaries for Grand Junction High School and Central High School, with changes potentially starting in fall 2026.

The proposed boundary changes aim to balance student enrollment between the two schools, as Grand Junction High currently has about 1,900 students, significantly more than Central High.

"I think getting closer to an equal number of students between the two high schools is important," said Clint Garcia, chief operations officer for District 51.

Families with siblings already attending Grand Junction High will be able to continue sending their children there, even if affected by the boundary changes.

There will be a bus service provided for one year for those affected by the changes, but families will need to arrange transportation afterwards.

Community meetings are scheduled to discuss the changes, with sessions on November 10th at Bookcliff Middle School Library, November 12 at Orchard Mesa Middle School Cafeteria, and a virtual meeting on November 13.

Lucas Gallegos, a student at Grand Junction High School, expressed a desire to attend Central High because more of his friends are there.

The new boundaries will be presented to the board of education on November 18, and school officials plan to keep families informed as the changes approach.
