Overview of my undergraduate honours thesis project completed with supervision by Dr. Brian Klinkenberg, presented at the 4th International Cartography Association Spatial Analysis and Measurement workshop in Vancouver in 2011.

Abstract: This study shows that in British Columbia, Canada, 95% of the population inhabits less than 2% of the provinces land area. This fact is proven by delineating the provincial 'population ecumene' using a multi-level, binary dasymetric GIS procedure with better than 100m spatial accuracy. This paper begins by arguing why this method is a timely contribution to cartographic theory and practice. A literature review of contemporary dasymetric methods is presented to situate the present study within a longstanding tradition of population mapping. Next, nine geospatial data layers are presented and then integrated into a 'positive-negative' model that delineates inhabited and uninhabited areas. Additionally, this method is applied to mapping of census population density for Metro Vancouver to illustrate the utility of this innovative approach in practice. Finally, future research directions, study limitations and cartographic applications are presented.
