What should be our diet and lifestyle in ICP? Although arsodioxycholic acid is the mainstay of treatment, diet and lifestyle contribute 50 per cent to the improvement of outcome. So let us see how the diet should be. Mainly diet should be liver-friendly. A diet should contain low levels of carbohydrates, low fat, and also be high in fibre. High fat intake causes bloating and distention, thereby difficulty in digestion will be there, liver will be overburdened. Coming to the fibre intake, women should include a lot of fibres, greens, legumes, and seeds. High fibre will form the stool bulk and also helps in the excretion of the bile acids. And coming to the protein intake, protein intake should come from lean proteins like fish is healthy, eggs are fine, vegetables should be taken, seeds and legumes should be taken. Also, women should take on vitamin supplementation, mainly B group vitamins, B6, B12, and B9, which is folic acid should be consumed. That comes from green leafy vegetables, legumes and eggs. And vitamin C helps in improving immunity, and vitamin E-rich foods help in antioxidants. So oxidative burden on the liver will be reduced. And also high glycaemic index foods or junk foods should be completely avoided here. Also, women should be put on vitamin K supplements and along with all of this, most important is water intake, which is hydration. Women should be taking 8 to 10 glasses of water per day. Coming to the lifestyle management, we need to focus on stress reduction, sleep hygiene, exercise and monitoring the weight gain. Stress reduction in the form of yoga, mindfulness, and meditation should be worked on. Second thing is exercise, moderate exercises are always okay, welcome in ICP, either in the form of swimming, walking, or Pilates can also be done. The next important one is sleep hygiene; 8 hours of good sleep is important; go to bed on time, and monitor your weight gain. Weight gain should not be too much or too little, also. Also, calorie restriction should not be very low so that the baby will not go into foetal growth restriction; it should be maintained properly.
