Soybean oil bottles have vanished from the shelves of most Dhaka stores three days after the government declined to boost prices.
As the price of unpacked soybean oil has surged over that of bottled soybean oil, some sellers have opened up the bottles to sell in little amounts and earn quick money.

Some shops are doing so to keep their loyal consumers satisfied as well. Customers would not purchase other items if they did not get the edible oil, they said.

On Friday, shopkeepers in the capital's marketplaces were selling bottled soybean oil for Tk 180 to Tk 185 per litre.

Soybean oil that had not been packaged was no longer available. Customers were charged between Tk 190 and Tk 195 per litre by certain shops who sold unpacked oil by opening the bottles.

The superstores had a few 5-litre bottles, but the alley grocery shops did not offer the larger bottles.

Some of them were selling half-litre bottles for Tk 90.

"Oil is scarce at many stores. After unable to locate a 5-litre bottle, they [retailers] told the firms had ceased delivery," said Motiur Rahman, a Malibagh resident who purchased two two-litre bottles for Tk 180 per litre.

Rampura, Hazipara, and Shantinagar were all in the same boat.
