Are Microwaves Safe? 🤔 Are Microwaves Safe for Food? Are Microwaves Harmful? - Dr. Ashley

Let’s talk microwaves. Many people are concerned about using them, and yet they are in almost every home in the US. Microwaves use short radio waves (a form of EMF) to cook food. These waves are selective to water and other molecules. The microwaves literally vibrate the molecules in food at very high frequencies to heat them up. There is some thought that because of the short cook time, and minimal use of liquid, that nutrients are retained, however there are studies suggesting that they can deform the structure of the molecules in food making them less nutritious. There is also concern about the amount of EMFs leaking out of microwaves.

Note that as concerned as I am about harmful EMF exposure, there is a faraday cage around the microwave oven and very little gets out. Although I would not recommend standing right in front of one when it is on. This means that the other devices like our cell phones, wifi, and routers have more EMFs leaking around the house.

Let’s be aware that all cooking will take some nutrition out of food, whether boiled, steamed or cooked in the oven. The concern with microwaves is the possibility that it could make food actually toxic. Interestingly there are studies suggesting for high heat cooking with microwaves that the food itself is safe and maybe even less carcinogenic.

So most likely microwaves aren’t dangerous.

This all being said, I don’t like to use a microwave because it makes the food more tasteless and mushy. And I’m still not totally convinced about the nutrient content after microwaving.

On a personal note, I don’t use a microwave. I am lucky to have a nice toaster oven that has so many settings and convection oven capabilities that I don’t miss a microwave. I also lightly steam veggies rather than boiling which helps preserve a little more of some of the nutrients.
