Ft. Clinch State Park, Fernandina Beach, Florida - another Ruff Road Campground Review

Florida! What's not to love about Florida in the wintertime? Florida is my home state and Gary has lived most of his life here. So, we consider ourselves native Floridians. One of the best things about Florida is the mild winters. We head to Florida in December for the holidays and to take care of any business we need to before resuming our travels. This trip was spent with family making memories.

Ft. Clinch is the northernmost east coast Florida State Park. It sits on the Amelia River and the Atlantic Ocean. A short drive takes you to the beautiful little town of Fernandina Beach. Bonus: There is a historic fort there that you can tour.

What we love about Fort Clinch State Park:
1. The scenery - Moss draped giant oaks, palm trees and palmettos, ancient dunes, large scenic river, Atlantic Ocean, white sand dunes, expansive marshlands, wildlife...
2. Fort Clinch - Historic Fort Clinch is an easy walk or drive from your campsite. Admission is $2.50 per person. You are provided a paper guide to tour the fort and learn about its history.
3. Campgrounds - There are two campgrounds here, Amelia River Campground and Atlantic Beach Campground. They both provide 50 amp electric and water. There are primitive sites for tent campers at the Atlantic Beach Campground. Both campgrounds provide ample space and basic campsites amenities such as fire ring, picnic table, lantern holder. If you like woods, shade and water views then you'd prefer the Amelia River Campground. The sites at this campground are large, as well. If you like palm trees, white sandy dunes, and close proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, then you'd prefer the Atlantic Beach Campground. Both campgrounds are very clean. You'll find a bathhouse, dump station, and dumpsters at each campground.
4. Wildlife - Deer here!
5. Lots to do - Hike, bike, kayak, fish, sightsee, go shelling, swim...
6. Verizon service worked great.

What we didn't love about Fort Clinch State Park:
Having to leave! No, just kidding. This one doesn't count.
1. Dirt campsites - The dirt campsites provide a more authentic camping experience but become quite a muddy mess in the rain. This is Florida so it will rain at some point. Just be aware, mud will happen.
