Dynamic Range Compression VS. Tonal Compression.

This is very important. When you compress a vocal or an instrument you need to know WHY you are compressing it.

We have a tendency, and I’m just as guilty, of just compressing a track because that’s what you are supposed to do. But Why!?

If you have a reason why you want or need to compress then your results will be better because you have a plan and reason. You have a problem or feeling you’re trying to accomplish.

Dynamic Range Compression- This is they type of compression where you are trying to control the volume range between the loudest and most quiet parts of the audio.

A vocal, for example, can be a really dynamic instrument having huge volume differences between the loudest and most quiet parts.

You would want to control this range and bring the louder and more quiet parts closer together with some dynamic range compression for a more even vocal performance that sits in the mix better.

Tonal Compression - This is how it “Feels” or sounds more than it has to do with volume.

On the same vocal example. In this video I am dealing with a rap/hip hop vocal. I don’t want to take all the life out of the vocal.

I want energy and a little more aggression than a singing ballad. I have to think about how I want to “shape” the sound of a vocal with tonal compression to convey the feeling and energy this style and genre of music calls for.

If I’m thinking of this before I start compressing, I will have a better plan of what and how to do this to accomplish my goals which will result in a better performance.
