My Venus flytraps (VFT) have recently been dealing with swarms of green caterpillars, and in this video I document how these carnivorous plants respond to slow, chewing insects rather than their usual flying prey. I keep many Venus flytraps (Dionaea muscipula) in my carnivorous plant room, and over time I have been able to film repeated interactions as caterpillars actively feed on the traps themselves.

These green caterpillars belong to the Small White Butterfly (Pieris rapae), which have wandered into my Venus flytrap room, known as the Den. Unlike flies, these caterpillars crawl across the trap surface, repeatedly triggering closure while also biting into the lobes. This chewing behaviour creates small holes in the traps, often preventing a clean seal and changing how the plant responds during feeding.

Filmed in detailed 4K macro, the footage captures multiple half and full closures as the VFT reacts to sustained contact. Some flytraps fail to close properly due to damage, while others still manage successful captures despite visible wear. The video closely observes trigger hair activation, trap movement, and the physical stress placed on the plant when dealing with destructive caterpillars rather than typical airborne insects.
