STORYLINE:

The broad framework of a seven-nation free trade zone in South Asia that would bring together one-fifth of the world's population was agreed on Friday in meetings ahead of a major regional summit.

The Indian Foreign Secretary Shahshank said the accord, which would start tearing down tariffs by Jan. 1, 2006, was reached during talks between foreign ministers in Islamabad preparing for a leaders' summit of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation, which begins Sunday.

"Informal consultations among the foreign ministers has made it possible for the SAFTA agreement to go through," said Shahshank, who goes by one name. "This is a historic summit where many momentous decisions have been made."

Indian Foreign Minister Yashwant Sinha said the accord could lead to even greater cooperation in the future - even a common currency - an idea that has seemed unlikely amid widespread poverty, civil war in several countries and deep-rooted tension between India and Pakistan.
