🔸First Hop Redundancy Protocol (FHRP) is a networking technology that provides redundancy and failover capabilities for network devices such as routers and switches. FHRP allows multiple devices to work together to provide a single virtual IP address that can be used as the default gateway for hosts on the network. This virtual IP address is shared among the devices, and if one device fails, another device can take over seamlessly without affecting the network performance.

Types of First Hop Redundancy Protocol (FHRP):
There are several types of FHRP protocols, including:
◾️Hot Standby Router Protocol (HSRP): HSRP is a Cisco proprietary protocol that allows two or more routers to work together to present the appearance of a single virtual router to the hosts on a LAN. HSRP provides redundancy, load balancing, and failover capabilities to the network.

◾️Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (VRRP): VRRP is an open standard protocol that provides similar functionality to HSRP. VRRP allows multiple routers to participate in a virtual router group, with one router being designated as the active router and the other routers as backup routers. The active router is responsible for forwarding packets sent to the virtual IP address.

◾️Gateway Load Balancing Protocol (GLBP): GLBP is another Cisco proprietary protocol that provides load balancing and redundancy for IP traffic. GLBP allows multiple routers to share the load of forwarding traffic to a single virtual IP address. GLBP uses a load-balancing algorithm to distribute the traffic among the available routers, and if one router fails, the remaining routers can take over the load without affecting the network performance.

🔉In conclusion, FHRP is a critical networking technology that provides redundancy, failover, and load balancing capabilities to ensure high availability and performance for network devices. HSRP, VRRP, and GLBP are the most commonly used FHRP protocols, with HSRP being the most popular among Cisco networks. By using FHRP protocols, network administrators can ensure that their networks remain up and running even in the event of device failures, leading to a seamless and uninterrupted network experience for the end-users.
