This story is about the brave warrior Udal of Bundelkhand, who was tricked and magically transformed into a parrot by a sorceress Sobhiya Natni.
Beginning of the Story:
During the Jyeshtha Dashahara festival, Queen Sunwa decided to visit the Bithoor fair for a holy dip in the Ganges. Udal accompanied her. There, a sorceress and dancer named Sobhiya Natni lured Udal into a game of Chaupar (an ancient dice game) and used her magic to transform him into a parrot. She then took him away.
Natni’s Conspiracy:
Sobhiya kept Udal as a parrot during the day and turned him into a man at night, forcing him to accept her as his husband. However, Udal refused to marry her. She traveled to various kings, seeking refuge, but no one dared to accept Udal, fearing war with Alha, his mighty elder brother. Eventually, she hid in the deep forests of Jharkhand.
Queen Sunwa’s Search:
Udal’s disappearance was initially kept secret to prevent enemies from attacking Mahoba. However, Queen Sunwa, using her magical powers, transformed into an eagle and searched for him. She found him trapped in a cage hanging from a tamarind tree in the forest. Using her magic, she rescued Udal, but he refused to escape secretly. He insisted that his brother Alha must fight and defeat the sorceress to free him honorably.
Alha’s War:
Sunwa informed Alha, who marched with his army. A fierce battle ensued. Sobhiya used fire magic, but Sunwa countered it with water magic. Seeing her defeat, Sobhiya desperately attacked Sunwa. Meanwhile, Indal, Udal’s brother, cut off her braid, which was the source of her magical powers. With her magic gone, Sobhiya was helpless.
Conclusion:
Defeated, Sobhiya fled to Junnagarh, and Alha's army crushed her warriors. Udal was finally freed and returned to Mahoba, where grand celebrations took place.
