On New Year’s Day, a U.S.-made MQ-9 Reaper drone crashed in a mountainous region west of Kabul, near Maidan Shahr in Afghanistan’s Wardak province. Images of the wreckage circulating on Afghan and international media show Taliban members inspecting the downed drone, raising serious questions about America’s ongoing over-the-horizon operations in Afghanistan.
The MQ-9 Reaper, a long-endurance surveillance and strike drone used by the U.S. Air Force and CIA, appeared to be flying a reconnaissance mission, with no visible Hellfire missiles attached. While the exact cause of the crash remains unknown, early indications point toward a technical failure, possible loss of control link, or harsh winter weather conditions — with no evidence of hostile fire.
The bigger mystery is where the drone came from. With a range of nearly 2,000 km and endurance exceeding 24 hours, the MQ-9 could have been launched from multiple regions. However, with no confirmed U.S. bases in Afghanistan or Central Asia, attention has once again turned toward Pakistan.
The Taliban have repeatedly accused Pakistan of allowing US drones to transit its airspace, allegations Islamabad has consistently denied. Following the collapse of Afghanistan-Pakistan talks in Istanbul in late 2025, Afghan sources claimed Pakistani officials admitted to an agreement with the United States that they “cannot break”.
