Microsoft Excel Tutorial: Adding multiple columns of text in an Excel textbox.

Welcome back to the MrExcel podcast! In this episode, we're diving into one of the great new features of Excel 2007 - the ability to use Excel as a word processor. This trick has actually been around since Excel 2003, but it's still a useful tool to know.

Have you ever needed to fit a lot of text at the bottom of a report and make it fit a certain number of columns? Well, with the Edit, Fill, Justify command, you can do just that. Simply select your text and choose the number of columns you want it to fit into, plus a few extra rows to allow for the text to spill over. In Excel 2003, you would use the Edit, Fill, Justify command, but in Excel 2007, it's located on the Home ribbon under the Editing command. This feature is great, but it does have its limitations.

That's where the Text Box function comes in. Located on the Insert ribbon, the Text Box option allows you to draw a text box that spans multiple columns. You can then paste your text into the box, but here's the exciting part - in Excel 2007, you can now format the text box to have multiple columns! Simply right-click on the text box, choose Format Shape, and under the Text Box category, select the number of columns you want. This is a game-changer for those who need to fit a lot of text into a small space.

But that's not all - you can also customize the appearance of the text box by turning off the line and setting it to "Move and size with cells" so that it automatically adjusts as your cells expand. This eliminates the need to constantly use the Edit, Fill, Justify command every time you make a change. The 2-column feature in Excel 2007 is a game-changer and a much-needed addition to the program.
